It’s six weeks after american new year’s resolution and I am starting to get emails asking “How to Break My Weight Plateau”.  I have some ideas for you.   But first of all I want to thank all of you that made my “How Do I Get Abs” book launch on a global hit!  It was amazing, I made it to number 1! Cutting Carbs Is More Effective Than Low-Fat Diet for Insulin-Resistant Women,Study Finds; Science Daily (June 21, 2010) — Obese women with insulin resistance lose more weight after three months on a lower-carbohydrate diet than on a traditional low-fat diet with the same number of calories, according to a new study.

Time for some new ideas.  If you are experiencing a stall or plateau in weight loss efforts, you are not alone. This occurs from time to time to almost all of us trying to get thinner. However, you first must make sure that you have actually reached a plateau point.

A plateau means that you have gone an extended period of time without losing weight or inches. It’s important to take your measurements before you start your weight loss plan, in addition to your weight. On some weeks it may not seem like you are not losing any weight at all on the scale. But a quick look at your measurements could prove otherwise.

On a higher protein diet you are replacing fat with muscle, which is denser and heavier. You might actually gain a little weight because you are building muscle. The result will be an increase on the scale, but a decrease in your inches. Your body will be smaller and leaner, but you may weigh the same.

Before you start your program, measure your chest, waist, hips, upper arms, thighs and calves. You never know where you may be losing inches, so it’s important to have these measurements to refer to.

It is normal to go through periods where you body is readjusting. Remember that you are reforming the composition of your body and this process will take some time. Check your measurements once a week, just like your weight, and you can track your overall progress.

What Is A Plateau?

There may be periods of 3 to 4 weeks where you have a plateau in weight loss, but a loss in inches. Or vice versa. Using both methods to track your fat loss is the best assurance for an accurate measure of your progress. These stall periods are not a reason to quit or to give up. They are biochemical parts of the weight loss process.

Plateaus may occur more frequently if you are 5 to 10 pounds away from being at your goal weight. By following a low-carb, higher-protein way of eating you have created a lot more muscle in your body. Your muscle-to-fat ratio is higher than ever before, so your body might be resisting losing anymore fat. It may be time to rethink your goal weight. Perhaps your body is trying to tell you something and its time to start maintaining your weight loss rather than trying to lose more.

What Causes Your Scale to Get Stuck?

There are some other possible causes of  plateaus on the road to weight loss. If you’ve gone four weeks with no change in weight or measurements and you are nowhere near your goal weight, you can try a few different methods to get yourself out of the rut. First, make sure your carbohydrate level is in check. If you are eating too many carbohydrate grams per day, your weight loss will stall. Look for hidden carbohydrates in your coffees, alcohol, packaged foods, snacks, dressings and sauces to make sure they aren’t the culprits in your plateau.

 Check your daily water intake. When you are dehydrated, your body will retain water and that can mimic a plateau. Water will also help flush ketones from your system and make more room for new fat burning ketones.

It may be time to eat more.

Under eating can also be a cause for weight loss plateaus. Make sure not to let yourself go hungry and eat smaller, more frequent meals. Remember, you are on a carbohydrate-restricted diet, not a calorie-restricted diet. Make sure to have some protein with every meal and snack. Never go more than 4 hours without eating something (except overnight of course). Also, eat freely from the acceptable foods. Don’t try to count calories or restrict your calorie intake. When your body gets too few calories, it goes into starvation mode and will hold onto fat cells. AAAHH!!


Pump It up!

Increasing your exercise level or adding more slower systemic fat burning cardio can help get you through a plateau as well. As your muscles get used to working out at a certain level, you’ll have to increase the duration or the intensity in order to keep challenging your body. Add a new exercise into the mix, or try increasing more reps into a light weight resistance training circuit.  You don’t need to go to a gym to do cardio. You can so it anyplace.

Trying one of these suggestions will most likely get your weight loss back on track. Remember that occasional stalls are normal, but they do not have to last.

I am not a novice self certified fitness chick who took some great photos and built a web site to sell photos of myself and dole out canned fitness material. I am a living professional testimony and a highly educated person as well. I have been where you are and I have lived to tell you about how I lost over seventy pounds, kicked diabetes, high blood pressure, depression and cellulite out of and off of my body.

I have personally worked with thousands of people over the course of my career in professional athletics, dance/fitness endorsement contracts, in nutrition and health.

Over the years I have been asked a myriad of outrageous questions. There are certain ones that always come up over and over again.  “Have you ever had a personal struggle with yo-yo dieting?”

My answer is “Yes, most of my life, before I discovered a permanent solution to being fit, lean, tight and energy filled”.

If you are like most of my clients, you have been looking for some definitive answers about what really works and what can you do to finally lose lumpy fat and live in the body you desire.  If you are happy with your body because you think you are going to get another one when you go to heaven, that’s great.  This rant is not for you.  I understand that some people want to pray for a new body while they continue to eat wings (fried chicken skin) dipped in mayonnaise ranch!

I am offering up real information and suggestions to people who are ready for a physical change NOW!

I totally understand all the confusion and uncertainty surrounding losing weight, dieting and nutrition. I know I was confused in college when I was obese, type 2 diabetic, had hypertension and high blood pressure at such a young age. Everyone in school I hung out with were overweight and no one told us we were going to have a life of medical bills, preventable diseases and saggy skin and giant rod map stretch marks.

I tried every diet on the planet trying to lose weight and get rid of unsightly belly fat.  I suffered from chronic water retention, migraine headaches and I was on the verge of early arthritis.  I lived in a constant state of stress and was diagnosed twice with clinical depression. I was a big hot mess.

It was hard to believe I once was the captain of a dance team, cheerleader and an avid runner.

Before I got obese, I was into performing arts and lived in skimpy performance gear. I was thinner then, but I was not healthy. I was binging and purging and I would go for days without eating anything but apples because someone told me that just eating fruit was a great way to lose weight.  OMG!! I’m surprised I  am still alive.

When I was in high school I would diet all during the school year to fit in my costumes and then I would binge all summer because I had starved myself for nine months. One summer I gained thirty pounds during the summer and in order to get the weight off before dance team practice, I binged on fruit again only this time I decided to add starvation and laxatives and became anorexic.

The concerns I had then are the same now.  I listened to friends instead of finding a healthy role model to help me.   When you are desperate, it’s hard to know who and what to believe.  I know that as a “diet diva” most of my life, I tried it ALL.  Since I was a true experimenter of everything on the market in regards to health, fitness, and diet, I know what is fraudulent, and what is truly real and what really works for us who have struggled!

The strategies, exercises, fitness and health suggestions I give in all of my DVD’S, programs, books and articles have tested true for my readers and clients who follow the directions.

Science and Technology
Science and technology have improved and what we know now about the weight loss industry is vast.  Access to resources for the purpose of improved health has grown tremendously, yet I know that despite the amount of information available, we still want answers that give maximum and permanent results.

In the course of weight loss coaching and fitness training, I have come across many common concerns and I thought I would address them. If at any point in your weight loss and fitness journey, you have questions, feel free to contact me on my website.  The following questions are the most commonly asked and how I addressed them.

I have been on so many diets that I lost count. Here’s one of the most often asked:

Everyone is trying to convince me to give up and accept the body I have.  They say dieters regain weight because of genes, hormones, and no self-control.  What is your opinion? What should I do?

Dieters regain weight because they are not consistent with the right diet and exercise program. Research now shows that your habits, environment and lifestyle are a great indicator of your success or failure when it comes to building the body you love.

One of the ladies I worked during the course of her weight loss journey began to feel afraid of the possibility of reaching her weight loss goal.  I asked her why she was afraid and basically, the fear arose because of the belief that she would regain the weight. I told her she would not regain the weight back if she has successfully incorporated the concept that weight loss is a mind, body, and spirit application.  When your mind is transformed to new thinking, you have experienced the freedom of weight loss and all the benefits, and when you are living your purpose, there is no way you will EVER GO BACK!

Realistically, I think this was a true concern of hers, and one many of us have had at one time or another.  Some times what we are really afraid of the is the “new person” we will become especially when we keep seeing our relatives and thinking we are doomed forever to carrying excessive belly fat or saddle bags on our hips or cellulite on our body lurking out in every crease and crevice.

Change is scary; your non-conscious mind will have you questioning yourself constantly.
Will people still love? Will I still love the same people? Will my friends get jealous? Will they support me or sabotage?  What about my job or career?  Will I be satisfied living where I live?  Those are only a few of the heavy questions that come up to squelch the thin person trying to squeeze their way out of the pounds of covering.  I know. I experienced it.

Even today, as I change, grow, evolve and move forward, people drop off, fall away, run away and even flat out criticize my journey.  It has nothing to do with anyone but me, yet they feel it is their place to “talk” instead of working on themselves.

Become A Winner

You are definitely going to have to change your lifestyle. Does that mean we change everything you eat at once?  Truthfully, for some people, the answer is yes, especially if your health depends on it.  For others, it may be a few simple adjustments.  It’s going to be so much easier when you let me help you.  I want you to have fun adjusting and to laugh and giggle at the crazy comments of others and begin to make this weight loss dream a game.  A game where you win, you get the prize and your become the trophy.

But what about genetics you ask.  

WOOHOO in my programs, genes, hormones, and lack of self-control will not affect your long-term weight loss success and keep you from living in it permanently.

MAKE Your Dreams Come True

It is a beautiful day and I am sitting out in the sun giggling like a five year old at a birthday party.

I just finished staring at the cover of People Magazine that has one of my clients on the cover as a Weight Loss Success Story.

It is thrilling to see someone set a goal, work through all the obstacles they face on the path to attaining it. That’s a hard fast fact about life. “It Ain’t Easy”.

Beginning this week, you can create the life of your dreams and wear all the glam clothes you have always daydreamed about. And don’t even try to pretend it doesn’t matter. Clothes are an expression of who you are and a vehicle to share your creativity with the world around you.

Camille fought for her goal each day by moving from a place of depression, extremely poor health to what Fergie sings about, “Glamorous” living.

I’m sure if you’re like me, you have days when you just can’t bear to eat one more carrot or drink one more ounce of water, you feel like you are going to hurl if you take one more bite of some tasteless egg whites.

I trained so hard on Saturday, that i could barely lift my fork to eat my last meal of the day. I was nauseous from dehydration and sore from a high intensity step training workout. But i knew I did not eat my fish and vegetables, my blood sugar would spiral out of control and I would hit rock bottom and go into an emotional food/mood black hole. That would ruin the entire experience I had earlier dancing and training.

How many times have you done that? skipped a meal, then went on a crazy food binge? Yeah me too. That was also one of Camille’s issues she had to overcome. SHe was so busy and she was so stressed, that she would go hours and not eat anything and then at night she would crave sweets and give in to sugary goodies.

Camille had every diabetes symptom and she was suffering from unpredictable mood swings when we fist met. She was trying so hard to lose weight when I first met her that she would barely speak to me without being angry. She was not angry at me, she was angry at all the programs that had failed and at herself for feeling like a failure.

She felt like she was doomed to live in a fat suit that was suffocating the very essence of life right out her soul. She would cry every-time we talked. It was so hard for her to try ONE MORE TIME. She didn’t feel like she had the money to pay an elite trainer like me and she did not feel like she was worthy to invest the necessary time it was going to take into her own body.

The cost of dis-order and dis-ease is hundreds of dollars more than my DVD’s and
my Quick Start Energy Program that she used to lose over ONE HUNDRED POUNDS OF LIFE ROBBING- SELF ESTEEM DESTROYING GREASE! She started with me by pure faith. She had been praying to God for an answer to her health problems and asked God to send her a TRAINER. Every great business owner that wants to be successful has accountants, consultants and look for a multitude of sources for innovation, creativity and profitability.

Your body and your health is your greatest responsibility. when you lose your health and your motivation, you lose your drive to be great and succeed. Every relationship you are involved in is affected. How you feel about yourself determines how you perform and how you share yourself
with others.

You are so unique and so special but you will NEVER realize it if you don’t do the right things for your body, your health, your mind and your Spirit. You are not on the earth alone and you were not made to function alone. Get connected with people of power and energy. Get away form negative energy sucking losers who complain all the time, people who use you and and make you feel obligated to help THEM great what they want while you suffer in silence. You have a voice and you have a destiny.

Camille went on to RELEASE the extra weight, change her opinion of herself and her worth and went as far as moving to NEW Place where she feels free and powerful. How about you, what do you need to do this week to feel more powerful and more free and in control of your future.

It can start as simple as controlling your appetite, controlling your tongue by not saying negative words and stop complaining and telling your stuff to anyone who will listen hoping for sympathy. Don’t ever seek sympathy, only seek solutions and guidance from above. NO one knows you better than
your creator.

This is going to be an awesome week for you. I feel it right now. I love it when women understand that they are no one’s slave and they have the right to live in abundance and prosperity. You deserve a life of joy and outrageous adventure. You have the right to jump out of bed with energy and vitality, rush to your closet because you can’t wait to put on beautiful clothing that is worthy of being displayed on your precious body!
