I want to make sure that when I do have time to workout, that I do the right workout. I have a gorgeous party dress I bought and I don’t have time to lose a bunch of weight. I want to know what to do to look and feel sexy for my husband when he sees me in it. – Basilia

 

ANSWER: Hey Basilia,

I know what you mean; coming up on the holidays are real stressful and it’s one of the busiest times of the year. We are all busy, busy, busy!! Running around from place to place constantly, exhausted, low on energy, fatigued, eating on the run and devouring caffeine, sugar and carbs like long distance marathon runners. The only problem is that we are not burning those thousands of calories of sugar per day like they do. Ours is literally killing us; messing up our digestion, hormones, and of course our body shape, size and overall health. We have to look at totally different if we want to burn fat faster.

Why We Do The Things We Do

First of all, what you are experiencing in your appetite is instinctual, physical and spiritual.

As we move into wintertime, you will start to find yourself longing for rich hearty feel good foods, more carbohydrates, and more downtime. These cravings are your body’s natural way of adapting to the changes in the season. Our bodies were designed to adapt to the weather, seasons and environmental conditions. As the weather cools down, you have a natural desire to eat warm foods as opposed to cold salads and fresh fruit, you want more bread, stuffing, carbohydrate-rich foods and sweet desserts.

The colder weather, darker evenings and end of the summer season are indicators that it is the time to turn inward. Our bodies have a tendency to want to slow down and hibernate in the winter. But we typically do the exact opposite. Instead of slowing down and replenishing our energy, we usually end up burning the candle at both ends.

SO you see, our appetite and desire for comfort are programmed in us. That is part of the reason why it is so hard sometimes to lose weight in the winter and especially around the holidays as food is connected to our social life.

During holidays you not only want to eat more, you have a desire for more love, deeper more meaningful relationships and you want to be involved in fun family gatherings more often. That satisfies your soul and sense of belonging. But on the other hand it usually brings with it a longer “to do list”! That can leave you overwhelmed, underappreciated and taxed to the limit. So then you eat whatever is in front of you and that can be a disaster on your waistline, hips, thighs and upper body.

During these busy times, it is even more important that you get organized, create a life schedule that allows you to make time to workout, move more, dance, play, sing and train your body in fun ways. According to John Robinson, a time expert, and professor of Sociology at the University of Maryland, we have more free time than we think. The best way to find out where your time is going is to keep a journal of all of your activities for a week then analyze it. Be honest, we all have places where we can take out unnecessary errands, conversations, TV watching, searching for misplaced items, etc. When I first did this exercise I found that I was spending a lot of time talking to people to help them solve their problems or talk through things that did not involve me. I found myself mentally exhausted at the end of the day. I definitely needed to redirect my emotional and physical energy so that I could take better care of myself.

Ink it -Analyze it and then… Change It

All analysis takes a little bit of time at first, bur once you know the patterns, you can change it and have MORE time in the end! Take one day of your life and write down every single activity from the time you wake up until the time you go to sleep. Don’t cheat. Be honest with yourself so that you can get a true measurement of where your time is being wasted, spent or invested well. Time is like money. You can use it wisely and become rich or you can waste it frivolously and end up broke!

Your time analysis journal will reveal your true activity quotient. If you are not spending at least 60 minutes doing something that brings you closer to your goal every single day, you need to change your activities and then redirect your energy so that you can achieve your goals.

You can only manage what you measure. As an example, when I was overweight, I would spend at least 30 minutes a day reading magazines that were food related including collecting high fat dessert recipes. I was so consumed with eating and fatty foods that it took up most of the time that I could have been using to reduce fat, yet I was spending over 7 hours per week energizing my downfall.

When I spent my time thinking about food, food, and more food. That’s exactly what I did… EXPAND!!! I kept getting bigger and bigger. Dress comfortably so that you can toss a big beach towel or a mat on the floor and spend 10 minutes doing something that energizes you and helps you have less back pain.

What You Do Is What Determines What You Feel

I try never to let anyone get to me so much that I get down on myself.  I don’t need anyone dogging me out because they had a bad day or they are disappointed with their life. Each person’s perception is personal. It belongs to them and was conceived through their life story. It is a compilation of their thoughts, experiences, and influences wither they are positive or negative. They were formed by the age of 8.

Whatever and whoever was in their life up to that point is who helped form their opinions.  There is no way I am going to let someone else, who was programmed by someone else, have a damaging effect on my heart, psyche or mental state.

Our life is what we make it. If we can change the circumstances, then we must change how we see them until we can change them. Power is in the perception!

That is why I sign off with something positive each week. Words are just the beginning, what we do; counts, what we do matters and what we create is what we will have.

Now Let’s get to it!

Bloated Puffy Belt Hangover –Most people retain a little water, and it is fairly common. As women, we especially may notice an increase in water retention during the week before our period. It’s fine to stop water retention at home that is minor. If water retention seems major, occurs all the time, and is continually resulting in puffy extremities or excessive weight gain, this can indicate serious health issues. If you suffer more than a little water retention, you should not try to stop water retention at home but should see your naturopath or healthy fit doctor for a thorough checkup.

Here are some great ideas to help stop water retention and reduce bloating and puffiness.

1. Sip Herbal Tea. Parsley or uva-ursi tea can help flush out excess water without any harmful side affects, you can find these teas in most health foods stores.

2. Reduce Sodium – Minimizing extra sodium in the diet is crucial.  I had a photo client that macked out on salty pretzels and drank soda. She did it while she was flying in for the gig.  She did a triple whammy to her body before a photo shoot. Of course she had to fly, but she should have drank water and bought an apple or orange at the airport to have as her snack while she was flying instead of eating high glycemic salty pretzels! AAHHH

Almost all packaged and canned foods contain some level of sodium. Most natural food sources also have some sodium too, though the amount is usually less.  When making food choices, look for low sodium varieties of foods, especially canned foods and prepared meals. The can make you puffy, stiff and bloated.

The next two tips must be discussed with your healthy physician or naturopath.

3. Take Vitamin B6. Taking up to 250 milligrams of vitamin B6 daily helps reduce premenstrual water retention. This nutrient also reduces fluid buildup caused by hormone imbalances.

4. Take Calcium. Researchers at the New York Metropolitan Hospital found that a daily calcium supplement provided relief from premenstrual water retention in three-fourths of the women who took it. If it’s safe for you, take 500-milligrams twice daily; one at breakfast and one at dinner. Ask your doctor whether these supplements are okay for you. It may not be recommended if you are taking certain medications.

5. Move – Increase Circulation. Walking, dancing, bicycling, stationary biking, tennis and any other training you enjoy, are all activities that help pump out water and other fluids that can pool in your legs and ankles. Doing cardio exercises with resistance training can make you sweat and release trapped salts and fluids.

6. Drink More Water – Water retention is common when you are dehydrated or low on water. The body tends toward conserving water, and will retain a bit in order to keep you hydrated. Drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day helps shed extra water, thereby reducing water retention. Interesting huh?

7. Increase Urine Formation – That’s right, Go more! When it comes to water, you can release it or retain it. Foods such as cucumbers, asparagus and parsley contain natural substances that increase urine formation. Other vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, cabbage and mushrooms can facilitate water loss in conjunction with a  good glycemic diet.

They require large amounts of water for digestion which helps pull it out from beneath the skin and into the digestive track. Plus they are high in fiber, which is healthy to keep your colon clean. A healthy clean empty colon helps with the appearance of a flat lower abdomen.

Try these ideas out and experiment with them until you find your perfect formula for getting rid of that awful feeling excess water, bloating and puffiness. Shop around and look for the best prices so that you can continue to eat healthy and improve your modeling potential.

 FinallyMedications.  If none of these work, and you are on medications, give your doctor a list of all medications you are currently taking–both prescription and over-the-counter–ask whether any alterations are possible.  Switching to a lower-dose estrogen in your hormone replacement therapy, for example, could reduce fluid retention. If you’re on steroidal medication, be sure to let your doctor know about your water-retention problems. He or she may prescribe a diuretic.

Life is so much better when  you choose to be victorious and not play the role of a victim. If you are a victim, then you can only get better by the hands of someone else. If you put your future in someone else’s hands, in the end, you will lose!

No one can care about you better than you can.

Testosterone, also called “T”, is the most potent of Male Androgens and is really what makes a man masculine, be able to grow a beard, have a deep voice, lift heavy objects, be highly sexual and have a great muscular body.

Having healthy levels of Testosterone helps to lower high risk of health problems like heart attacks or High Blood pressure.

This is a brief tutorial about your biochemistry. It is an overview of the major hormone you want to learn about, know and monitor. That hormone is called testosterone.

Testosterone is a hormone that is responsible for expressing masculine attributes in an individual. To be concise, testosterone is a male hormone. This hormone is present in both male and female, but I think it goes beyond saying that women have this hormone in a very miniscule amount in their bodies, whereas men have testosterone in larger quantities.

However, every male and female needs to have a certain amount of testosterone in his or her system to be biochemically balanced and metabolically sound.  The body balances the amount of testosterone and estrogen inside the body, and if either of the two crosses its limit, the system can drive that individual to express atypical gender behavior. Hey don’t get mad at me, this is just medical information that we all had to learn in our athletic training courses.

How do you find out your levels?  You need to get tested  and seek expert advice on Testosterone or to find out what works best for you.

Many things can effect your biochemical hormone levels. They change with time and from stress, physical exertion, bad diet, pharmaceutical drugs, high estrogen foods and a pollution.

Having Trouble Blasting Your Belly Fat Away?

It’s not just you. Every Monday morning millions of people get up to get dressed for work and can’t believe their mirror.  They suffer from the Monday Morning Belly Fat Blues after a weekend of fun food indulgences.  They can’t believe that they have to go through another week with too a too tight waistline and a pooch in their pants.

So you see, you are not alone if you have just a little too much belly fat hanging over your clothes.

How do you lose that belly fat?  It seems that while the other fat is hard enough to burn off, the last fat to leave us is that which is covering our abdominal muscles.  Your sexy abs may be hidden away under a slab of belly fat.

There are several issues we need to think about, so over the coming lessons, we’ll dig into the factors involved in fat loss in general, but specifically how to lose belly fat.  To begin with, we’ll look at common myths about fat loss.

Then we’ll move on to what exercises can help, what specific dietary advice will help reduce fat, touch on ab workouts and their effectiveness for belly fat loss and finally what minor lifestyle changes to make that will accelerate fat loss as you uncover six pack abs.

To start off, let’s dispel some common misunderstandings about fat loss.  Namely, spot fat burning.  This means trying to burn fat in a particular trouble spot: the belly, the thighs, the butt – wherever you have excess fat.  The body is a bit more complex than that.

It’s tempting to think that we can burn fat like we can harvest trees for firewood: take a little here and take a lot there.  But it just doesn’t work that way.  Doing sit-ups and ab curls will tighten and tone the abdominal muscles and strengthen your pelvic girdle. You may even lose several inches as a result of toning, but there’s still that stubborn layer of fat clinging to your belly. 

Why? Your body uses fat differently than you might think.  To top that off, it also stores fat differently than you think, too.  And then there’s the fact that there are different types of stored body fat, some of which are easier to lose than others!

When it comes to spot fat burning, there’s no way to physically do it.  Despite all of the hype and outright lies in the diet and fitness industry, you can’t decide to just lose belly fat.  You have to treat it with an overall fitness plan with sound nutrition as well as consider reducing lifestyle habits that add to the mix.  Stay Posted as we cover more on this in coming blog posts.

She omitted all the junk that she had as a part of her diet. She says, “We cut out processed foods, white sugar and white flour, alcohol, sodas, and she drank about 2-3 liters of Water a day.”

She Is Dining Fresh and Spending Some Cash
Janet Jackson has just provided a huge boost to an Los Angeles based company called Fresh Dining. A few months ago Janet Jackson weighed 180 pounds. Now she has lost 60 pounds in just four months. This weeks Us magazine has Janet on their cover, looking fantastic. And in the magazine, Jackson reveals that her diet consists of getting all her prepared diet meals delivered to her door each day.

Fresh Dining is only available to residents of Los Angeles and Orange Counties. If you live there, you too can get meals delivered to your door everyday. The service is not cheap.

It costs about $55 per day for three organic meals and two snacks. The meals are planned around how quickly you want to lose weight. You can choose the 1,000 calorie package or the 1,400 calorie package.
