Tribal Dance

I was hanging out at the barge with a group of friends resting after a tough day of rehearsals.  There were tribal drummers, homemade flute players and a chanter. It was an inspired session of percussive hypnotic rhythm.  As the evening progressed, people of  every size, shape, gender and culture started dancing like one global tribe.

Then, this stunning Brazilian Princess stole the show. She ripped off her shirt, tied it around her tiny tight waist and performed for us all. After she performed, she proceeded to teach us all some of her competition moves. It was sheer exhilaration.

I have always loved dance for fitness but that night my understanding of dance went to a deeper level.   But after our tribal groove, now I really understood how important dance is a universal form of expression and communication.

History & Dance

Throughout the history of the world, dance has played a vital role in important life rite passages, celebrations, and ceremonies. Battles have been fought and won immediately following weapons dances.  Kingdoms have been won and lost and then celebrated with dance. Kings and Monarchs have been crowned then celebrated with dance, and marriages have been consummated with ritual dances.

Dance has always been at the center of important events until recent history when it seems that dance and the importance of creative dance for morale got lost somewhere in the process. Dance these days seems to be limited to certain people in certain circumstances or only to those who engage in the art of dance for the entertainment of others rather than the simple joy of dancing for the sake of just having fun and the enjoyment of creative movement.

Dance Making a Comeback

The importance of dance in schools and social bars seems to have been misplaced in the last century or so, fortunately with the popularity of competitive star dance shows around the world, we are seeing a rebirth for the love of dance.  It is on the rise is so that it isn’t something meant to entertain us a mere spectator.  Now, as the days of old, we are beginning to entertain ourselves with dance again!

In addition to the entertainment aspect of dance is the physical activity it creates that have so many positive health and mental benefits.

We live in a world where the expected lifespan of our children, is shorter than the lifespan of those who are already adults. The primary reason for this is a lack of physical fitness and rise in obesity in youth. We need to lead by example and show our children that it is important to do little things that get us off our seats and onto our feet. Dance is a great way to do that.

Dancing also increases muscle tone and circulation and gives the body a longer and leaner look over time and with consistent, disciplined training.  This gives a renewed sense of grace and self-confidence.

Dancing relieves stress and releases feel-good endorphins if you’re working hard enough to work up a good sweat. This reduces depression and makes you feel happy!

I was recently in Costa Rica and let me tell you, dancing is a family affair! Everyone would just dance and play for hours every weekend.  What a blast.

It’s your turn. You can put on some music at home and dance with your kids.  Go to a dance class or take a dance lesson.  Going to dance classes is a blast. There are so many fun workout dance classes now, that you can dance every day.

This type of movement is common to us as a species. It is also necessary if we want to lead a healthy, happy long life.

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) defines these movements as any activity that uses large muscle groups that can be maintained continuously and is rhythmic in nature, and by doing them, our heart rate is elevated beyond it’s resting state.

There are many different cardio exercises that are considered the best to help you to lose weight as long as it is performed for a longer, slower amount of time or for a longer distance, thus LSD Cardio, one of the best forms of fat burning activity there is. That is why when you see distance runners they ‘re usually lean and thin. In running circles, it is also known as “long, slow distance endurance training”. It is exactly as it sounds.

LSD CARDIO is a form of aerobic endurance training. It is commonly associated with sports such as running and cycling. Long, slow distance training is a form of continuous training performed at a steady, slow pace using low to moderate intensity over an extended distance or duration.

You can experience euphoric feelings while doing LSD cardio. It is facilitated with the release of brain chemicals called endorphins. They are believed to improve your mood, give you a euphoric state if being and can keep you feeling motivated, energized and feeling good before, during and after working out. When I first began training for weight loss, it was extremely difficult.  What I found was more enjoyable than being heavy.

The state of accomplishment I experienced when I finished a 1-hour power walk was so intense it became addictive. It became a part of my life that felt more important than eating. I am not a novice self certified fitness chick who took some great photos and built a web site to sell photos of myself and dole out canned fitness material. I am a living professional testimony and a highly educated person as well. I have been where you are and I have lived to tell you about how I lost over seventy pounds, kicked diabetes, high blood pressure, depression and cellulite out of and off of my body.

I have personally worked with thousands of people over the course of my career in professional athletics, dance/fitness endorsement contracts, in nutrition and health.

Over the years I have been asked a myriad of outrageous questions. There are certain ones that always come up over and over again.  “Have you ever had a personal struggle with yo-yo dieting?”

My answer is “Yes, most of my life, before I discovered a permanent solution to being fit, lean, tight and energy filled”.

If you are like most of my clients, you have been looking for some definitive answers about what really works and what can you do to finally lose lumpy fat and live in the body you desire.  If you are happy with your body because you think you are going to get another one when you go to heaven, that’s great.  This rant is not for you.  I understand that some people want to pray for a new body while they continue to eat wings (fried chicken skin) dipped in mayonnaise ranch!

I am offering up real information and suggestions to people who are ready for a physical change NOW!

I totally understand all the confusion and uncertainty surrounding losing weight, dieting and nutrition. I know I was confused in college when I was obese, type 2 diabetic, had hypertension and high blood pressure at such a young age. Everyone in school I hung out with were overweight and no one told us we were going to have a life of medical bills, preventable diseases and saggy skin and giant rod map stretch marks.

I tried every diet on the planet trying to lose weight and get rid of unsightly belly fat.  I suffered from chronic water retention, migraine headaches and I was on the verge of early arthritis.  I lived in a constant state of stress and was diagnosed twice with clinical depression. I was a big hot mess.

It was hard to believe I once was the captain of a dance team, cheerleader and an avid runner.

Before I got obese, I was into performing arts and lived in skimpy performance gear. I was thinner then, but I was not healthy. I was binging and purging and I would go for days without eating anything but apples because someone told me that just eating fruit was a great way to lose weight.  OMG!! I’m surprised I  am still alive.

When I was in high school I would diet all during the school year to fit in my costumes and then I would binge all summer because I had starved myself for nine months. One summer I gained thirty pounds during the summer and in order to get the weight off before dance team practice, I binged on fruit again only this time I decided to add starvation and laxatives and became anorexic.

The concerns I had then are the same now.  I listened to friends instead of finding a healthy role model to help me.   When you are desperate, it’s hard to know who and what to believe.  I know that as a “diet diva” most of my life, I tried it ALL.  Since I was a true experimenter of everything on the market in regards to health, fitness, and diet, I know what is fraudulent, and what is truly real and what really works for us who have struggled!

The strategies, exercises, fitness and health suggestions I give in all of my DVD’S, programs, books and articles have tested true for my readers and clients who follow the directions.

Science and Technology
Science and technology have improved and what we know now about the weight loss industry is vast.  Access to resources for the purpose of improved health has grown tremendously, yet I know that despite the amount of information available, we still want answers that give maximum and permanent results.

In the course of weight loss coaching and fitness training, I have come across many common concerns and I thought I would address them. If at any point in your weight loss and fitness journey, you have questions, feel free to contact me on my website.  The following questions are the most commonly asked and how I addressed them.

I have been on so many diets that I lost count. Here’s one of the most often asked:

Question:
Everyone is trying to convince me to give up and accept the body I have.  They say dieters regain weight because of genes, hormones, and no self-control.  What is your opinion? What should I do?

Answer:
Dieters regain weight because they are not consistent with the right diet and exercise program. Research now shows that your habits, environment and lifestyle are a great indicator of your success or failure when it comes to building the body you love.

One of the ladies I worked during the course of her weight loss journey began to feel afraid of the possibility of reaching her weight loss goal.  I asked her why she was afraid and basically, the fear arose because of the belief that she would regain the weight. I told her she would not regain the weight back if she has successfully incorporated the concept that weight loss is a mind, body, and spirit application.  When your mind is transformed to new thinking, you have experienced the freedom of weight loss and all the benefits, and when you are living your purpose, there is no way you will EVER GO BACK!

Realistically, I think this was a true concern of hers, and one many of us have had at one time or another.  Some times what we are really afraid of the is the “new person” we will become especially when we keep seeing our relatives and thinking we are doomed forever to carrying excessive belly fat or saddle bags on our hips or cellulite on our body lurking out in every crease and crevice.

Change is scary; your non-conscious mind will have you questioning yourself constantly.
Will people still love? Will I still love the same people? Will my friends get jealous? Will they support me or sabotage?  What about my job or career?  Will I be satisfied living where I live?  Those are only a few of the heavy questions that come up to squelch the thin person trying to squeeze their way out of the pounds of covering.  I know. I experienced it.

Even today, as I change, grow, evolve and move forward, people drop off, fall away, run away and even flat out criticize my journey.  It has nothing to do with anyone but me, yet they feel it is their place to “talk” instead of working on themselves.

You are definitely going to have to change your lifestyle. Does that mean we change everything you eat at once?  Truthfully, for some people, the answer is yes, especially if your health depends on it.  For others, it may be a few simple adjustments.  It’s going to be so much easier when you let me help you.  I want you to have fun adjusting and to laugh and giggle at the crazy comments of others and begin to make this weight loss dream a game.  A game where you win, you get the prize and your become the trophy.

High Volume Leg Training – Sexy Shapely Thighs

If you want to get in better shape faster, then stand up, get off your seat and work on your lower body.

Training your lower body makes your entire body shape up faster. Isn’t that what you want? Faster, quicker fat loss while sculpting and shaping?

If the answer is yes! Then it’s time to Get Your Pump on.

High volume (high reps combined with multiple sets of each exercise) is perfect if you want to lose fat, increase your metabolism and shape up your lower body.

A high volume program works faster and is much more effective in getting cuts without using massive weight.

Use low intensity weights, enough so that you can do 15 to 20 reps easy the first time.

Using volume training you do as many reps as you can, between 15 to 20 reps per set.

Then you do 4 to 5 sets of your chosen exercises.

Move quickly through your routine. Try to work so that you are breathing
at a good pace to pump up the intensity and increase your heart rate.

Try to make it aerobic so that you increase your circulation, increase your stamina and build up more endurance.

What Inspires Me To Dance and Stay Lean

OKAY.. you all keep asking me these questions.. I did an interview last week and here are the answers to two of the questions. I hope you are able to design your own proess for staying motivated to build your best body ever!! You can do it you know!

How do you maintain your enthusiasm and energy?
I have an unbridled passion for Movement!

I was born to move. I have danced and participated in some form of fitness and sports all of my life. I love the way I feel before (psyched) during (unstoppable) and after (exhilarated and liberated) I workout.

I am constantly setting three month goals with measurable stats and then I design a game plan. I find a group of like minded people with a similar desire and we train like world class athletes. I attract people who love music, dance and live to sweat. They make their health, their body and their longevity a priority. The programs are 12 weeks in length. I cut pictures out of magazines and write out my goals in my day planner and track them. I watch dance, sports and triumph themed movies. I have a great collection of all the best dance movies ever produced. I love watching music videos and going to live performances to see the creativity in costuming and choreography. I love sports too, so I watch everything from football to golf, to basketball to baseball. I watch reality shows like, “Dancing With the Stars”, “So You Think You Can Dance” to “The Olympics” to “The Best Damn Sports Show to “The Miss America Pageant:” to the “NCAA Basketball Women and Men’s Championships”! There are so many wonderful examples for me to gain inspiration and motivation from. I love them all and I draw something different from each of them that I use to develop a lifestyle of putting my workouts first!

*Describe your favorite workout.
My Vertical Training/Dance Jamm and Body Revival Workout! It is the absolute most fun class I have ever done in my entire career. I love coachng and I love pushing people to move beyond their perceived limitations. We all have self-assigned limitations that come from our backgrounds that serve no healthy purpose except to put us in a little box with little goals and little expectations. It makes me sp frustrated, I could scream. I only feel that way, because I used to live on that block of no-where land, USA!

Enough for my rant….
Back to my Three hour private training sessions.
We begin with a half an hour of cleansing moves to detox our system and get our bodies ready for a fat burning and cardio conditioning – Longevity workout. We begin with compression focused stretches, lyrical dance moves and ballet moves. Then we add 1 pound leg weights for tightening up our assets and weights 3 -5 pound hand weights for targeted upper and body tightening and lengthening exercises for 15 minutes. This is what i call a SLOW BURN. It is the type of training that realy sculpts the legs and produces a deep mucle burn. It hurts so good!

Then we go to moderate intensity 60% of Max Heart Rate for 45 minutes using dance funk and hip hop moves. After the fat burning we go into a 15 minute high intensity cardio endurance training at 80% of our Max. Heart Rate. We conclude with lyrical moves and athletic stretching. It is a fusion of dance/funk/weights/ and sports. It is inspiring and challenging.

I use a wide variety of slammin’ music and we even have themes some days like… “Paradise” Island wear..hip hop wear..Broadway themes, etc. The variety keeps it fresh and the workout yields tremendous results. Our bodies never get adapted to the workout and we get to keep it in a high metabolic state and lose body fat while increasing flexibility, endurance, aerobic conditioning and detoxing.

It completely changes a person’s life and seeing other people succeed is what give me the juice to get up every day and persevere. I love people and I love to move. When those two are combined the passion oozes out of me. That is what keep me inspired.
